Experienced Service

Stephen T. Fanning has served as a trial attorney for the National Labor Relations Board and as Assistant Counsel for labor relations for the Massachusetts Board of Regents of higher education. In 1994, he opened his own law firm in Rhode Island to represent all employment-related matters in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Attorney Fanning practices extensively in the federal and state courts and administrative agencies of both Rhode Island and Massachusetts, including, among others, the Rhode Island and Massachusetts Federal District Courts, the First Circuit Court of Appeals, the Rhode Island Workers' Compensation Court, the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training, the Massachusetts Commission Against Discimrination, the Rhode Island Commission for Human Rights, the Social Security Administration, and all other employment related state and federal forums.

Among the hundreds of cases that Attorney Fanning has processed through the federal court system, he tried the first case in the nation to interpret the Federal Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

Throughout his career, Attorney Fanning has also represented individuals and labor organizations in numerous arbitrations involving various collective bargaining issues and well as termination cases. He is a past editor of the Healthcare Labor Manual, a publication focusing on labor and employment matters in the health care field. In addition, he has served as an adjunct professor of labor and employment law at various educational institutions.
